In honor of Rusty the therapy dog - spring special

Linda, one of our dog-loving bloggers on our new community site I Remember Love, recently wrote about her dog, Rusty, who just passed his evaluation to become a full-fledged therapy dog.

Besides Linda’s obvious and justifiable pride in Rusty’s accomplishments, I was struck by her description of him.

“…the most placid creature on the face of the earth; letting absolutely nothing bother him.”

They threw things at him, offered him food, and did everything they could think of to distract him. Nothing worked.

I know for a fact that even my darling Maui - the meditating champion - would not resist a treat, no matter what!

;-)

In honor of Rusty’s certification, we’ve decided to keep the DVD version of Do You Remember Love? at $9.95 for a few more days, and not put it “out to the world” yet. So this is still a private sale just for dog lovers like you who get my emails on a regular basis.

If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, go here to check it out:

Rusty’s Spring Special: DVD

And Rusty, thanks for being such a good dog. I know your new friends at nursing homes will be infinitely enriched by your loving, peaceful companionship.

I hope I have a “therapy dog” like you if I’m ever in need!

Warm Aloha,

James

why Maui didn’t get a haircut for so long

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Wow!

So many of you sent emails chastising me for letting Maui go so long without a haircut that my assistant Crystal thought I should explain the “why.”

Maui (the island) is paradise … but not for groomers.

There are only three on the entire island - for 100,000 residents!

They are all fully booked, all the time.

Maui’s groomer, Allyson of Pawsitively Purrfect, is one of the sweetest, most doggy-loving people I know. She grew up rescuing injured animals - wild and domestic - and to this day remains totally obsessed with furkids.

She’s totally in love with Maui, and takes excellent care of her like clockwork, every six weeks.

You can see a photo of her here: www.irememberlove.com/photo/photo/show?id=2013722%3APhoto%3A4761

But a few months ago she had to go out of town for several weeks, and because she works ten hours a day, six days a week, many of her clients had to live without her services - there was no way for her to “make up” the appointments that she missed.

Meanwhile, the other two groomers … well, let’s just say that I would never, ever, take Maui to them.

I have had very bad experiences with both, and one cut Maui’s eyes a few years ago and actually caused the cataracts that she carries to this day.

She never even apologized!!!!!

The regular bathing and brushing that Molly and I do just isn’t what Allison can do - but waaaaay better than what either of the other two groomers do.

When Allyson said she was not going to be able to see Maui for three months, Molly and I were quite downcast. We asked if there was ANYONE else on the island that she trusted with Maui (who is her second oldest client), and she said

“I wish there were. I’ve been trying for years to get reliable help.”

If you know any stellar groomers who want a job in paradise, let us know - Allyson’s waiting list alone could be a second practice!

Allyson really is a “pet angel,” and we’re blessed to have her. Check out her photo here:

www.irememberlove.com/photo/photo/show?id=2013722%3APhoto%3A4761

You’ll see immediately why her clients adore her. She oozes dog love.

Meanwhile, Maui thanks you for your concern.

;-)

Warm Aloha,

James

appreciation for you: maui is MUCH better!

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Wow - thank you for all of your good thoughts for Maui’s health and well-being in the last few days. Within a few hours after sending that email, she visibly perked up.

And that night she ate her first full meal in a week. The next morning she was hungry and waiting for another full meal … and since has been absolutely “regular” in her habits ;-) and back to bouncy.

I’ve been sending all of you my thanks and appreciation, and also to your dogs and cats and other precious creatures.

This morning I got a link from my friend Dr. Andrew Jones with HIS newsletter reader “Appreciation” special - so appreciation seems to be the buzzword of the week.

How appropriate!

Dr. Jones has put all of his products - which are invaluable to me in sifting through health options with my elderly Maui - on sale at 75% off through Monday.

Take a look here now:

I appreciate you so much. Much health to you.

Maui sends licks and kisses.

all is finally “whale”

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

I tried to think of something inspirational to write about for this morning’s email, but I am having some trouble.

It’s been a distracted week for me, because Maui got some sort of a stomach bug last week and didn’t feel tops for quite a few days.

I find it really hard to focus - not only because she wasn’t feeling well, but also because it was the anniversary of her adoption day … and it felt like a significant time.

Our meditations helped keep us close and both of us calm. She’s feeling MUCH better this morning - finally ate a whole bowl of food like she usually does - and I’m glad.

But a little nagging voice in the back of my head seems to still be speaking up with a “is she really OK?”

So I am going to ask you a favor. Will you please send Maui some “good vibes” or prayers or meditate on her health today?

I know that millions of people thinking of her health will do wonders.

While we’re at it, why don’t we all do a meditation for all of our pets today. We all deserve to know that all of us are caring about each other and our loved ones.

If you want a really cool “meditation” soundtrack, I recently found out about this AMAZING website with actual, live broadcasts of the whales off the coast of Maui!

This very cool group of people have a microphone under the water (right where I live, actually) that broadcasts to the internet, so you can listen to the whales on your computer.

A friend once told me that during whale season (November to April) on Maui all is “Whale” no matter what.

So maybe we should listen to the whales telling us that All Is Whale, while we meditate on our dogs (and cats, and parakeets, and all creatures) wellness or “whaleness”.

Go here to listen: http://whalesong.net

If you have the time to post your thoughts or prayers for Maui and everyone else’s pets on please make a comment!

Warm Aloha from Maui, where Maui is Whale, finally.

do snuggle puppies suffer from winter depression?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

It’s times like this when I’m really grateful to live on Maui.

You know what I’m talking about - the snow and extreme weather that’s happening all over. I’ve heard about LA highways turned into snowy parking lots, deer herds starving because the snow and ice is too thick for them to find food, and severe weather all over the mainland.

My friend Liane is having a hard time this winter with SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder. She lives in DC, and is really feeling the blues from lack of sunlight. I think I used to get SAD, too, when I lived in DC. The dark and cold can really get you down. Even my buddy and pet vet extraordinaire, Dr. Andrew Jones, is having trouble with the winter gloomies. This morning he shared his litany of woes, and noted that pets deal with winter in a totally different way than we do:

I am constantly amazed how Dogs and Cats always are SOO POSITIVE. Lewis could care less if it is dismal and raining, minus 20 and cloudy or a Sunny Summer day. He is LIVING in the moment and appreciating all that life gives him.

I gotta learn how to live more like my dog.

P.S. If any of you have any words of wisdom, I would LOVE to hear them.

I don’t know how wise I am, but I know Maui is VERY wise and she has one piece of advice for Dr. Andrew Jones and everyone else who is SAD this winter:

Become a Snuggle Puppy. Snuggle Puppies don’t get SAD!

Maui insists on our meditation sessions on even the brightest of Hawaiian days, but when we lived in the dark and dreary DC, she was doubly insistent. As Dr. Jones points out, our pets live in the moment, and that can make all the difference. So if you are one of the many suffering from Deep Freeze Depression, snuggle up to your pup and have a nice little meditation. Ten minutes can make all the difference - and five is better than none at all. Make this a priority this winter. You’ll really see a difference. (And your dog will love you for it!)

Warmer Aloha than Usual,

James Jacobson

I love Thanksgiving.

Any holiday that is only about the food is OK by me (I think Maui agrees with me).

As I have been making my “Gravy List” this month, (a list of all the things I am grateful for) I was surprised to find myself writing down

“I am grateful that I didn’t get Maui when I was a little boy.”

Let me explain.

I started asked my parents for a white doggy when I was four, but they never allowed me to have one.

No matter how often I asked, they put it off until “next year.”

They never understood how badly I wanted that little dog. I never did get her. On my tenth birthday - when I was absolutely sure they would give me a dog - they gave me a guinea pig instead.

I’m sorry, but a guinea pig is not a dog.

I was a good kid and I didn’t complain, so I don’t think they ever knew how much that hurt my feelings.

I was so heartbroken every birthday and holiday when I didn’t get a dog. Remembering it makes me a little lonely for that poor kid.

As I got older, I didn’t expect them to get me a dog, and stopped asking. But I never stopped wanting a little, white, bouncy dog to curl up on my lap.

Then, fifteen years ago, I DID get her!

I gave Maui to myself on Valentine’s Day 1993, and I am so grateful that I did.

As an adult, I understand that my parents weren’t being mean - they just didn’t get how important this was.

And if they had given me my dog then … well maybe I would never have found Maui on my own.

And if I didn’t want her so badly for so long, maybe I wouldn’t appreciate her as much as I do now.

Who knows how things would have been different?

As the holiday season progresses, I hope that you get your fondest heart’s desire.

After all, the child in us deserves to get everything he or she wants.

It may not be possible to get what you want, but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve it.

For a lot of us, the love we share with our dogs (and cats!) is the purest love we’ve ever felt.

I’m grateful for that love every day, but especially on Thanksgiving.

It touches my heart to know you are all out there, watching Maui’s little movie and hugging your own dogs (and cats) like I hug mine.

Wow…I can almost feel all of you spilling over with love for your dogs.

Can you feel that, too?

Take a minute to “tune in” to all the dog lovers reading this.

Isn’t it amazing?

Thank you for that, too.

Happy Thanksgiving.

And if you haven’t watched the movie “Do You Remember Love?” in a while, go see it now. My mother-in-law says it is the perfect way to start the holiday season and remind ourselves of the true meaning of this time of year.

another pet conversation

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Alecia and I are having another free teleconference this coming Friday to talk about pet communication, pet loss, and nutrition for your pet.

http://www.petconversation.com

Why?

Two reasons.

Reason #1:
Enough of you missed the first call last Thursday and wrote in to ask for another … let’s say you were “begging” for it like Maui begs for chicken.

Reason #2:
The webcast technology cut off the last 15 minutes of the call for those listening online …

… don’t worry, I figured out what went wrong and it won’t happen again.

But I still “owe you” this call.

So please join us this Friday night at 6pm PST / 9pm EST to hear Alecia and me talk about all things pet.

Love,

James

PS: If you want to learn more about the class Alecia is teaching to help your pet stay healthy and happy, check this out:

Slots are filling up quickly, and we’re really excited about it. (I say we because I’m moderating for her!)
