Maui was due for a check up this week, so we went in yesterday. The vet checked her over and was happy to report that she seemed to be doing well despite her “senior” moments.
To make sure all was perfect he decided to take some blood.
Picture this: Jason, the tech, holding 8 pound white fluffy Maui from behind, wrapping his big arms around her front and holding her elbows.
Demian, our vet, taking blood from her leg.
Me, standing in front of her and stroking her ears and rubbing her chin to keep her distracted.
(When I am not there, she gets a little … cranky.)
About ten minutes of this … and Demian looks at me and says “I want you to stop meditating with Maui.”
I laughed - “yeah, right,” I said.
“Her blood pressure is so low that it’s going to take another 5 minutes to finish this vial!” he said.
It was pretty funny. Three full grown adult males needed to keep a tiny white dog calm … we thought.
Turns out she’s such a relaxed dog that she can’t pump out a little 5 ml vial of blood without waiting a loooong time.
Demian shook his head once again and said “I have to hand it to you - you’re definitely doing something right, with a senior dog like this.”
He likes my book, and even wrote a positive review on Amazon.com to let others know that as a vet he takes dog meditation seriously.
I know that meditation has been proven to lower blood pressure in humans.
I’ve always suspected that it lowers blood pressure in dogs, too - and it looks like I am right, at least in Maui’s case.
I just heard from Demian this morning that all is well with Maui - her tests all came back perfect.
I’m crediting meditation!
To your dog’s health,
Warm Aloha,
James

I hear Maui ordered me something, but she won’t tell me what it is yet.
